I love when the sand on the beach near the water dries in such a way that the water's ripple patterns are beautifully visible.

Early birthday celebration
We had an early birthday celebration tonight for my friend Jamie (her birthday is on Sunday night). It was another girl's night...only this time we stayed in rather than going out for dinner. Everyone brought something, and we ate nearly as well as we had at the Cafe (it's hard to beat the Cafe)!
Merle, Mary Ellen, Jamie and Beth...
..and Jen and Angie. If you didn't notice, yes, there is a wide range of ages in that group. That is one of my favorite things about living here - it has given me an opportunity to have friends in several generations.
Lesson learned: wait for the monkey-bread cake to cool down before putting the candles in it!
The second set of candles held up much better.
And then Jamie opened her presents. She had specifically instructed us that there were to be "NO GIFTS!"....so we brought presents instead.
This card was too funny to not share.
Hope you get to celebrate the milestones in your life with friends you love, wherever you are...

Catalog season?
I opened my mailbox yesterday morning and was so amazed at what I saw that I went back outside to my car to get my camera so I could take a picture.
There were 12 catalogs in there. (Well, actually one was a magazine.) I know Christmas is coming and it's the biggest shopping season of the year, but this is ridiculous!

Debbie Wells grew up in a family where food reigned supreme - with great home cooked Southern meals prepared by great Southern chefs. She began cooking professionally at the age of 23 in Atlanta, Georgia prior to relocating to Ocracoke in 1978.
She established the Back Porch Restaurant in 1982, cooked there every day for nearly 15 years and wrote the Back Porch Restaurant Cookbook. Since selling the restaurant she makes artwork, teaches cooking, bakes specialty cakes, and is cooking part time at the Cafe Atlantic.
Classes are $60 per participant and include an incredible meal following the session. Call 252 928.9036 to reserve your spot!

OPS Fall Membership Meeting and Auction
The annual Ocracoke Preservation Society fall meeting and potluck is scheduled for next Tuesday November 10th, starting at 6 PM at the Community Center. This year, there will be a new activity added to this event: an auction.
The items to be auctioned off are pretty varied, but all have an Ocracoke connection (of course) and many are historic items from the museum's library and archives. I am really looking forward to adding to my "Ocracoke stuff" collection! If you like Ocracoke stuff, and you'll be on the island next Tuesday, come and join us. (Just don't outbid me on whatever Ocracoke stuff I have my eye on, okay?)

Baby shower
I went to a baby shower for my friend Carol today. She and John are excited about welcoming their first baby (probably in January), and it was wonderful to bless them with gifts and well wishes. I love celebrating new life!
