Let's shop!

There are at least three yard sales planned for tomorrow morning. There may be more, but I know of three: one on Back Road, one on Cedar, and one at the Ocracoke Pizza Company building. I think Connor and I might need to take a walk around and do some shopping!

I don't need another single thing, but I usually find some little treasure that I like at yard sales. Sometimes I find gifts for others. I almost always come home with several books. What are your favorite yard sale finds?

Hi Katie, We are coming to the island next weekend (March 5,6, 7th)and was wondering if any restaurants are open or will be open?

Also could you tell me what property insurances are required on Ocracoke and what they cost annually for a 1000-1400 sq ft house?

Thanks so much for your help. Missy

Hi Missy -

Sorry for the slow response...

As far as restaurants: Gaffer's and Creekside have been open all winter and will be open this weekend. Jason's has also been open this winter, but will be closing soon for a break, so I think they may not be open by the weekend. Howard's Pub and Dajio are both reopening for the season on Friday 3/4. So you will definitely have at least those choices.

I'll post a second comment about property insurance so I don't run out of space on this one.

Okay, regarding property insurance: there aren't any insurances that are "required" by the county, but if you have a mortgage, the lender will most likely require you to have homeowners and flood insurance. I also highly recommend you get the "wind driven rain" addition to your homeowners insurance, as flood insurance only covers rising water.

As far as cost, there are so many variables that it's nearly impossible to give you an estimate. Homeowners is based not only on square footage, but also on specifics about the home, and levels of coverage, size of deductible, etc. Flood insurance is also impacted by the height of the home (above sea level), and the age of the building (if it is below the minimum height above sea level, but built before a particular year, it can be considered "pre-firm" (I think that's the right term), essentially "grandfathered in" so you don't have to pay the high premium which you would have to pay if it was built after that year but still built too low for the current requirements.

We use Nationwide for our coverage; they have an office in Manteo (Midgett Insurance Agency, 252-473-3930). Another company that I know folks use around here is Farm Bureau; they have an office in Swan Quarter (252-926-9601).
